NTPC Limited, Indiaโs largest integrated power utility, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to develop a comprehensive roadmap for transforming its townships and offices into net zero establishments.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Vijay Prakash, Executive Director of SSEA and Environmental Engineering at NTPC, and Mr. Aaron Schubert, Deputy Mission Director (A) at USAID/India and Bhutan. The ceremony was attended by Shri Ravindra Kumar, Director of Operations at NTPC, in New Delhi.
NTPC is taking proactive steps to address climate change and has previously made headlines as the first energy company globally to declare its Energy Compact Goals during the UN High Level Dialogue on Energy.
As part of its ongoing commitment, NTPC aims to achieve net zero Scope 2 emissions for its townships and offices by the fiscal year 2025-26. The company is also working towards reaching net zero in water and waste for these facilities as soon as possible.
The MoU outlines the development of strategies and a roadmap for achieving net zero status, including benchmarking, implementation, certification, and scaling up these initiatives at a national level.
This agreement builds on NTPCโs earlier efforts, including a 2022 Statement of Intent signed with NITI Aayog. This earlier collaboration focused on developing a net zero GHG emissions roadmap for the NTPC Group in alignment with the Panchamrit goals set by the Government of India.
