India has experienced a remarkable surge in solar energy adoption in recent years, driven by falling costs and advancements in photovoltaic (PV) technology. As of August 2024, the nation’s installed solar PV capacity has reached 89,431.98 MW, accounting for over 58.58% of its renewable energy capacity, excluding large hydro. In August alone, India added more than 2.224 GW of solar PV capacity (93.5%), demonstrating its commitment to expanding its renewable energy base. At this point, Indiaโs total renewable energy (excluding large hydro) installation exceeds 152.65 GW, with solar and wind power comprising 89.5% of this total.

A significant recent development is the reinstatement of the Approved Models and Manufacturers of Solar Photovoltaic Modules (ALMM) Order by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), effective from April 1, 2024. This order aims to ensure high-quality and reliable solar installations, particularly for government-sponsored projects.
Currently, Indiaโs total renewable capacity, excluding large hydro, stands at 152.654 GW, with solar and wind power contributing nearly 136.624 GW. This highlights Indiaโs leading role in global renewable energy adoption. Solar energy is especially crucial to the countryโs sustainable development goals and climate change mitigation efforts, as it offers minimal greenhouse gas emissions and significantly reduces the carbon footprint.
Ground-mounted solar installations alone account for 69.19 GW, with an additional 2.59 GW from hybrid solar components. A notable trend is the increase in decentralized power generation through rooftop solar installations, which now total 13.89 GW. These installations on residential, commercial, and industrial rooftops not only enhance energy security but also support cleaner energy production.
In rural areas with limited electricity access, solar power is proving transformative. Off-grid solutions such as solar lanterns and microgrids, totaling 3.76 GW, are vital for providing electricity to remote communities and improving their living standards.
Indiaโs achievements in solar energy are the result of a combination of government initiatives, technological advancements, and growing awareness of renewable energy benefits. With solar energy representing over 58.03% of the countryโs total renewable installed capacity, India has emerged as a global leader in sustainability and the clean energy transition.
