India’s renewable energy sector continues to grow rapidly as the country works to meet increasing electricity demand while pursuing its clean energy and climate goals. Although coal remains the largest source of power generation in the country, renewable energy, especially solar and wind, is steadily increasing its share in the overall energy mix.

As of May 2026, coal accounted for nearly 41.2% of India’s total installed power capacity, highlighting its continued role in ensuring grid stability and meeting baseload electricity requirements. However, renewable energy is gaining momentum and is becoming an increasingly important part of the nation’s power sector.

Solar energy has emerged as the biggest contributor to renewable energy growth. During the first five months of 2026, India added around 21,236 MW of new solar capacity. This strong addition reflects the rapid development and commissioning of both utility-scale and rooftop solar projects across the country. India’s total installed solar capacity has now reached approximately 157 GW, making up about 68% of the total renewable energy portfolio and nearly 29% of the country’s overall installed power capacity.

The solar sector has also witnessed significant year-on-year growth, with installations increasing by more than 41% compared to the previous year. Industry experts attribute this growth to strong investor interest, supportive government policies, and improving market maturity.

Government initiatives continue to play a crucial role in supporting the renewable energy sector. Policies such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, and various domestic manufacturing support programs have strengthened India’s renewable energy ecosystem. By May 2026, the country’s solar module manufacturing capacity had reached nearly 200 GW, while solar cell manufacturing capacity expanded to around 27 GW. These developments are helping India reduce dependence on imports and strengthen its position as a major solar manufacturing hub.

India’s total installed power capacity crossed 542 GW in May 2026, recording annual growth of more than 14%. Renewable energy now contributes approximately 42.6% of the country’s total installed power capacity, indicating significant progress toward national clean energy targets.

The market is also witnessing growing interest in hybrid renewable projects, battery energy storage systems, green hydrogen initiatives, and round-the-clock renewable energy solutions. Large-scale solar-plus-storage tenders are becoming increasingly common as industries and power distribution companies seek reliable, clean energy sources.

Despite this progress, several challenges remain. Grid integration, transmission infrastructure development, land acquisition issues, and project financing continue to impact project execution. As solar and wind energy are variable sources of power, investments in battery storage, pumped hydro projects, and smart grid technologies are becoming essential for maintaining system reliability.

Looking ahead, experts believe that continued policy support, faster deployment of energy storage systems, and stronger transmission planning will be critical for sustaining growth. While coal is expected to remain part of India’s energy mix in the near future, the rapid expansion of renewable energy and domestic manufacturing clearly demonstrates the country’s commitment to building a cleaner, more resilient, and self-reliant energy future.
