Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS), in collaboration with Darling Green Country Estate and TouchPoint Energy, is embarking on a pioneering 6MW solar project in Darling, South Africa. This innovative venture, the first of its kind in the country, will unfold in two phases, contributing significantly to the local economy and energy resilience.
In the initial phase, SPS will commission a 1MW solar plant to provide clean energy to the newly developed Darling Green Country Estate. The energy produced will also be sold to Swartland Municipality for the first three years as the estateโs 163 stands, which have already sold out, continue development.
Phase two will see the construction of a 5MW solar farm, connected to the Eskom substation, enabling SPS to supply power through wheeling to customers connected to Eskom’s grid across the country. The first phase is expected to be operational by the end of October 2024, while the second phase is set for completion by mid-2025.
Francois van Themaat, MD of SPS, expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing its positive impact on the Darling economy and residents, while providing much-needed protection against load shedding. SPS, alongside TouchPoint Energy, views this as a major step toward enhancing renewable energy infrastructure in the Western Cape.
This ambitious solar initiative not only positions Darling as a leader in green energy adoption but also highlights the forward-thinking approach of local authorities in Swartland Municipality, which have actively supported the project from its inception.
