RWE Expands Solar Portfolio with New 20 MW Photovoltaic Plant in Bedburg, Germany

RWE continues to expand its solar portfolio with the launch of a new 20 MW photovoltaic plant in Bedburg, North Rhine-Westphalia. Built on recultivated land near the A 44 motorway in just six months, the plant’s 36,600 solar modules generate enough clean energy to power around 5,400 German households annually.

Adjacent to the Bedburg solar plant, RWE is also testing an Agri-PV demonstration, combining agriculture with green electricity generation. Along with this new installation, RWE operates five large solar projects in the Rhenish lignite region, four of which include battery storage systems. Additional photovoltaic projects, such as one at the Hambach opencast mine, are in development.Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said, “We are putting every effort into expanding our solar portfolio, and this includes using sites alongside motorways, like the one here in Bedburg. This is the seventh solar project that we have connected to the grid in the Rhenish lignite area, as we work to drive forward the energy transition in our home market of Germany. All in all, we will invest about 11 billion euros net in green generation capacity in Germany by 2030.”
