India has made impressive strides in adopting solar energy, thanks to falling costs and advances in photovoltaic (PV) technology. As of September 2024, the countryโ€™s installed solar PV capacity has reached 90,762.12 MW, making up over 58.73% of its renewable energy capacity, excluding large hydro. In September alone, India added more than 1.33 GW of solar PV capacity, showing strong efforts to expand its renewable energy resources.

Currently, Indiaโ€™s total renewable energy capacity, excluding large hydro, is over 154.529 GW, with solar and wind power contributing nearly 138.125 GW. Solar energy plays a critical role in Indiaโ€™s goals for sustainable development and reducing the impact of climate change, as it produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions and helps lower the countryโ€™s carbon footprint.

One important recent development is the reinstatement of the Approved Models and Manufacturers of Solar Photovoltaic Modules (ALMM) Order by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), which came into effect on April 1, 2024. This order aims to ensure high-quality solar installations, especially for government-supported projects.

Ground-mounted solar installations lead with 70.05 GW, and hybrid solar components add another 2.63 GW. Rooftop solar installations are also growing, reaching 14.3 GW. These rooftop installations, on residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, help improve energy security and promote cleaner energy. In rural areas, where electricity access is limited, solar power is making a significant impact. Off-grid solar solutions, like solar lanterns and microgrids, provide 3.78 GW of power, helping to improve living standards in remote communities.

Indiaโ€™s success in solar energy is due to government support, technological progress, and increased public awareness of the benefits of renewable energy. With solar energy making up over 58.73% of its renewable installed capacity, India is positioning itself as a global leader in clean energy and sustainability.
