In a significant move towards promoting sustainability in the aviation sector, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), met with Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, to discuss potential cooperation in integrating clean energy solutions into airport operations.
The meeting emphasized both organizations’ commitment to the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future, focusing on the integration of renewable energy sources into Dubai Airports’ infrastructure.
โIn line with the vision and directives of the wise leadership in consolidating a green economy in the UAE, we are keen to strengthen cooperation with government and private organizations that share our vision for environmental sustainability and achieving carbon neutrality,โ Al Tayer stated. He highlighted that the collaboration with Dubai Airports will enhance efforts to integrate renewable energy in aviation and improve energy efficiency at one of the worldโs busiest international airports.
Al Tayer reaffirmed Dubai’s progress towards the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aims for 100 percent clean energy production capacity by 2050. He noted that the short-term goal of achieving 25 percent clean energy by 2030 is expected to be surpassed.
Highlighting DEWA’s initiatives, Al Tayer pointed out ongoing projects such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is recognized as the worldโs largest single-site solar energy project. Currently producing 2,860 MW, with an additional 1,800 MW under construction, the solar park’s sixth phase is set to increase total production capacity to 4,660 MW by 2026. This initiative aims for DEWA to source approximately 27 percent of Dubai’s energy from clean sources by 2030.
Griffiths echoed the commitment to sustainability, stating, โDubai Airports is deeply committed to sustainability and operational excellence, in line with the UAEโs ambitious vision for a carbon-neutral future.โ He emphasized that the partnership with DEWA is crucial for incorporating renewable energy into airport operations, reducing environmental impact, and maximizing energy efficiency. โThis isnโt just about improving aviation โ it is about building a future where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand,โ Griffiths added.
