rPlus Energies has announced the successful commencement of commercial operations at the Green River Energy Center, a large-scale renewable energy project located in Emery County, Utah. The facility combines 400 MW of solar generation capacity with a 400 MW battery energy storage system capable of storing up to 1,600 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, making it one of the most significant clean energy developments in the region.

The Green River Energy Center is now the largest solar and energy storage project operating within PacifiCorp’s six-state service territory. Its completion reflects the growing role that Utah is playing in addressing rising energy demand across the western United States while supporting efforts to strengthen grid reliability and expand access to locally produced energy. The project aligns closely with Utah’s long-term energy strategy.

In 2024, Utah Governor Spencer Cox launched Operation Gigawatt, an initiative aimed at doubling the state’s energy production over the next decade. The Green River Energy Center represents a major contribution toward that goal by adding substantial new generation and storage capacity to the state’s energy portfolio.Governor Cox described the project as an example of the type of large-scale energy investment needed to support Utah’s future growth.

He emphasized that expanding reliable, locally generated energy resources is essential for creating economic opportunities, supporting communities across the state, and ensuring long-term energy security.U.S. Senator John Curtis also highlighted the importance of the project, noting that meeting growing electricity demand will require a diverse mix of energy resources.

He said the Green River Energy Center strengthens regional energy infrastructure, supports local jobs and communities, and contributes to providing dependable and affordable electricity for households and businesses throughout the western United States.Beyond its energy contributions, the project is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the local community.

Over its lifetime, the facility is projected to contribute more than $55 million in property tax revenue, helping fund schools, public services, and community programs. During the construction phase, hundreds of workers were employed, including several local contractors who participated in key aspects of the project’s development.

The project partners have also invested in workforce development initiatives to support the region’s long-term growth. A total of $375,000 in scholarships has been committed to local students who plan to pursue careers in their home communities, particularly in energy-related and other local industries. The initiative is intended to help develop a skilled workforce while creating future economic opportunities within the region.

Luigi Resta, President and CEO of rPlus Energies, said the project is the result of years of collaboration among numerous stakeholders and partners. He noted that the successful completion of the Green River Energy Center demonstrates the value of long-term commitment and shared vision in delivering reliable energy infrastructure that benefits communities across the American West. The start of commercial operations was celebrated during an on-site commissioning ceremony held on June 22.

The event brought together Governor Cox, project partners, local leaders, and community members to mark the completion of the facility and recognize its significance for Utah’s energy future. As part of the celebration, project partners announced a $45,000 donation to the Ferron Fire Department, which serves communities near the project site.

The contribution is intended to support local emergency response capabilities and strengthen community infrastructure. The Green River Energy Center has also received recognition from industry organizations and local business groups for its scale and impact. The project was honored with Project Finance International’s “Renewables Deal of the Year – Americas” award and was named the Emery County Business Chamber’s 2024 “Energy Company of the Year.”
