In a major step towards scaling up green hydrogen and ammonia production in India, AM Green has placed the country’s largest electrolyzer order with John Cockerill Hydrogen. This order is intended for one of the world’s largest green ammonia initiatives, which is set to be developed in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The project, which reached a Final Investment Decision (FID) in August 2024, will include the installation of 1.3 GW of advanced pressurized alkaline electrolyzers, to be rolled out in phases for producing green hydrogen from renewable energy.
The Kakinada facility will leverage 24-hour renewable energy sourced from wind, solar, and pumped hydro storage to ensure a steady supply of low-cost green hydrogen. For the first phase, John Cockerill will supply 640 MW of electrolyzers, with an additional 640 MW planned in the second phase. The project is on track to commence production in the latter half of 2026, contributing significantly to India’s green energy goals and positioning the country as a key player in the global green hydrogen ecosystem.
As part of a strategic collaboration, AM Green and John Cockerill are also setting up India’s largest electrolyzer manufacturing facility, capable of producing 2 GW of electrolyzers annually. This plant, also located in Kakinada, is expected to supply electrolyzers for AM Green’s broader green hydrogen initiatives, aligning with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The ambitious project is certified by CertifHy to meet EU RFNBO standards for green ammonia, ensuring compliance with stringent renewable energy criteria. AM Green has secured several offtake agreements with prominent players for the project’s green ammonia, which has potential applications across multiple sectors. By 2030, AM Green aims to reach a green ammonia capacity of 5 MTPA, supporting net-zero targets for both India and international markets, and achieving 1 MTPA of green hydrogen production, meeting a substantial portion of India’s hydrogen targets and 10% of Europe’s green hydrogen import requirements.
