The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), in collaboration with various federal agencies, have unveiled โThe National Blueprint for a Clean & Competitive Industrial Sector.โ This strategic initiative aims to accelerate the growth of American manufacturing while reducing pollution and creating high-quality jobs, in line with the Biden-Harris Administrationโs broader economic agenda.
The Blueprint outlines five key strategies to guide federal efforts in supporting the transformation of U.S. manufacturing. These strategies include accelerating the adoption of cost-effective, lower-carbon solutions, scaling up emerging technologies, leveraging data for emissions reductions, advancing research to lower greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and reducing embodied emissions throughout the product life cycle.
David M. Turk, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy, emphasized the importance of these strategies in driving growth within the manufacturing sector: โOur manufacturing sector is expanding rapidly under President Bidenโs leadership, employing millions of Americans while providing essential materials and products that people use every day,โ said Turk. โThis Blueprint will improve public health, accelerate innovation, and create even more good-paying U.S. jobs.โ
Manufacturing is a cornerstone of the U.S. economy, contributing 12% to the countryโs Gross Domestic Product (GDP) annually and directly supporting various other sectors. Additionally, many manufacturing jobs offer wages above the national average and are accessible to workers without a four-year degree. The sector also plays a crucial role in national security by reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.
However, the manufacturing industry is also responsible for roughly 20% of the countryโs total annual GHG emissions. The new Blueprint seeks to drive substantial emissions reductions across U.S. industry while reinforcing national competitiveness and security.
The Biden-Harris Administrationโs framework calls for significant investments in low-carbon industrial technologies, positioning the U.S. to lead in emerging global energy solutions. The Blueprint lays out a roadmap for federal agencies to coordinate efforts in pollution reduction, economic prosperity, and public health.
As global competition intensifies for emerging energy technologies, the U.S. aims to maintain its leadership in manufacturing innovation through coordinated federal actions and investments.
