Indonesia Advances Energy Transition at COP 29: Strategic Global Partnerships to Drive Clean Energy Infrastructure and Sustainability

PT PLN (Persero) has formalized five strategic partnerships aimed at advancing Indonesia’s energy transition during the Conference of the Parties (COP) 29. These partnerships, focusing on funding, technology, and human resource development, are crucial in building clean energy infrastructure and achieving sustainable energy self-sufficiency in Indonesia.

The global collaboration was sealed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and Grant Agreement between PLN and five international partners under the event theme “Leading the Charge: Strategic Partnership to Catalyze Decarbonization.” The partners include United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF), Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, Transportasi Gas Indonesia (TGI), and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP).

President’s Commitment to Climate Change
Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia at COP 29, emphasized the nation’s commitment to addressing climate change under President Prabowo Subianto’s leadership. “Global climate change requires a global solution. No country can face it alone. The only way to move forward is through collaboration,” he stated, urging all stakeholders to unite in seizing opportunities for a sustainable future.

Djojohadikusumo also highlighted the Indonesian government’s new strategy for the energy transition, which includes adding 75 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity over the next 15 years. This expansion aligns with Indonesia’s long-term vision of achieving clean, affordable, and self-sufficient energy.

PLN’s Commitment to Sustainable Growth
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo underscored the utility’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s energy transition while contributing to national economic growth. PLN continues to foster global partnerships, enhancing its capacity to deliver sustainable energy projects.

PLN has entered into a green funding collaboration with UKEF, the UK Government’s export finance agency. The partnership will explore financing opportunities for renewable energy projects, particularly for constructing transmission networks to integrate clean energy sources. Additionally, the collaboration will focus on increasing the technical expertise of PLN’s workforce in renewable energy development.

Collaborations with KfW, TGI, and Sembcorp
PLN has also joined forces with Germany’s KfW to fund energy transition projects in Indonesia, focusing on clean energy developments like Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA) and related transmission infrastructure. Both parties have signed a Grant Agreement for an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study to ensure these projects meet sustainability standards.

Moreover, PLN’s subsidiary, PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), has signed a Joint Development Framework Agreement (JDFA) with TGI and Sembcorp Utilities for a green hydrogen transportation initiative. This project aims to use TGI’s pipeline infrastructure to transport green hydrogen from Sumatra to Singapore, enhancing cross-border energy trade and increasing Indonesia’s hydrogen production capabilities.

Renewable Energy Access for Remote Areas
PLN and GEAPP have launched the “Renewable Energy Access for Last Mile” program, which targets improving energy access for remote islands in Indonesia and encouraging dedieselization. This initiative supports Indonesia’s commitment to providing sustainable and equitable energy to all regions.

Future Collaboration and Commitment to Sustainability
Darmawan concluded by reaffirming PLN’s ongoing efforts to explore new collaborations to ensure a successful energy transition. “We cannot do it alone. By uniting, we will move forward to reduce emissions, create jobs, and help save the earth,” he said, emphasizing the importance of global partnerships in achieving these goals.
