In a pivotal move at COP 29, His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Ahmed Al Tayer, Chairman of the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO), and Abdallah Al Dardari, UN Assistant Secretary General & Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), signed a new partnership agreement aimed at advancing global climate action.
The collaboration seeks to support countries in fulfilling their commitments under the Paris Agreement, focusing on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Key areas of cooperation will include carbon markets, climate adaptation and mitigation, integrated land and water management, and transparencyโcore aspects that will drive sustainable development and resilience against environmental and economic challenges.
HE Saeed Al Tayer emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating:
“Our partnership with UNDP strengthens our mission to promote a green economy that benefits both people and the planet. Together, we are working to support nations in their efforts toward a low-carbon future through collaborative approaches to achieving sustainability.”
Abdallah Al Dardari reiterated the shared commitment, saying:
“This partnership reflects our collective dedication to combating climate change by fostering low-carbon development. We will help countries build the capacity needed to meet their Paris Agreement commitments and create green projects that drive economic growth while addressing climate challenges.”
The partnership will initially focus on identifying countries with strong potential for green economy transformation. It will prioritize local engagement, climate action awareness, and the development of bankable green projects that attract both private and public investment.
A joint Steering Committee will oversee efforts to design impactful green projects and ensure large-scale NDC implementation. This structure will enable WGEO and UNDP to deliver scalable solutions that contribute significantly to global climate goals.
In addition to supporting projects, the organizations will co-host events, conduct research, and launch educational programs to promote green economy initiatives. Their collective goal is to inspire governments, businesses, and communities to invest in and support sustainable development worldwide.
