NorthWestern Energy Group, Inc. has announced plans to supply electricity to Atlas Power Group for its new data center in Butte, Montana. Atlas Power Group, currently a transmission service customer of NorthWestern Energy, is expected to require 75 megawatts of power starting in 2026, with potential growth of another 75 megawatts over the next three to five years.
Brian Bird, President and CEO of NorthWestern Energy, stated, “Our strategic energy generation investments and diverse energy portfolio allow us to support new, large customers like Atlas Power Group’s Butte data center, while maintaining affordable and reliable energy for our existing customers.”
Atlas Power Group President and COO Jeff Young, stated, “Atlas welcomes the opportunity to partner with NorthWestern Energy to supply cost-effective and reliable energy and transmission services to our flagship data center in Butte. With expanded growth opportunities on the horizon, securing long-term power supply at predictable prices is critical to support continued expansion and investment in our facilities. Atlas is also dedicated to maximizing our data center’s demand response capabilities to bolster the reliability and resiliency of the grid for the benefit of NorthWestern Energy’s Montana customer base.”
Earlier this week, NorthWestern Energy announced a new agreement to supply power for a developer planning to build data centers in Montana. Known for its clean energy, NorthWestern Energy generates most of its power from hydro, wind, and solar sources. The company’s recent addition of on-demand energy from the Yellowstone County Generating Station, along with increased capacity from the Colstrip Plant starting January 1, 2026, will help provide reliable and cost-effective energy to both current and future customers in Montana.
