DTEK, the largest private energy company in Ukraine, has chosen Fluence Energy B.V., a subsidiary of Fluence Energy, Inc., to provide Ukraineโ€™s first large-scale battery-based energy storage system. Fluence is a global leader in intelligent energy storage solutions, operational services, and asset optimization software. This project is a major step in boosting Ukraineโ€™s energy independence, stabilizing its power supply, and supporting the shift to renewable energy sources.

DTEK and Fluence, through DTEK Renewables, aim to complete the project by October 2025 to ensure the systems are ready before the 2025/26 winter. These energy storage plants will help strengthen the Ukrainian power grid and prevent outages, especially important under the challenging conditions of war. The project is a key part of โ€œDTEKโ€™s #FightforLight campaignโ€, which aims to ensure consistent power supply for Ukrainians during wartime. The six energy storage plants will be spread across Ukraine, with each plant having a capacity between 20 MW and 50 MW, totaling 200 MW. These plants will store up to 400 MWh of electricity, enough to provide two hours of power to 600,000 homes, roughly half the households in Kyiv.

DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko, stated โ€œBattery storage is a critical element in Ukraineโ€™s vision to build a decentralised energy system that reduces our emissions and enhances our energy security. The partnership with Fluence further signals our commitment to leading the way in battery storage, both in Ukraine and across Europe. Together, we will deliver state-of-the-art technology that will strengthen Ukraineโ€™s energy infrastructure.โ€

Fluence CEO Julian Nebreda, mentioned โ€œWe are pleased to partner with DTEK on this landmark energy storage project in Ukraine. This initiative not only demonstrates Fluenceโ€™s commitment to supporting Ukraineโ€™s energy security but also highlights our leadership in providing cutting-edge storage solutions to our customers. The project aligns with our mission to transform the way we power our world, laying the foundation for a more resilient, decentralized energy future for Ukraine.โ€

The new battery storage systems are designed to help stabilize the Ukrainian power grid by providing frequency and power balancing services for Ukrenergo, the Ukrainian Transmission System Operator. Unlike traditional power plants, these battery systems can respond in just milliseconds, offering a quicker solution to prevent outages and restore stability at the local level. These batteries will also offer advanced grid stability services through their grid-forming capabilities, making Ukraine one of the first countries to benefit from this cutting-edge technology. This will help improve the country’s energy infrastructure and speed up power restoration after outages.

DTEK has chosen Fluence, a leading energy storage company based in the US and Europe, to supply the systems. Fluence, a joint venture between Siemens and AES Corporation, has successfully delivered over 35 GWh of energy storage solutions globally, including projects in Lithuania and Germany. Their expertise in integrating storage systems into national energy grids made them the ideal partner for this project. Once the systems are delivered, DTEK and Fluence will work together on installation, integration, and testing to ensure the systems are fully prepared to meet Ukraine’s energy needs. DTEK staff will also receive training from Fluence to become certified partners for ongoing installation, maintenance, and future projects in the region.
