A 30 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, the largest of its kind in Eritrea, has been successfully connected to the grid at full capacity in Dekemhare.
The project, constructed by China Energy Engineering Corporation, marks the country’s first centralized solar PV facility integrated with an energy storage system. China Energy Engineering Group Shanxi Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. served as the EPC contractor, while Energy China International oversaw project execution.
The scope of the project includes a 30 MW solar PV farm, a 15 MW/30 MWh battery energy storage system, a 15/66 kV step-up substation, and a 750-meter dual-circuit 66 kV transmission line, designed to support efficient power evacuation and grid integration.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate approximately 73.89 million kWh of electricity annually, contributing significantly to reducing power shortages in the region.
The integration of energy storage is expected to enhance grid stability and reliability, addressing the intermittency of solar generation and ensuring a more consistent power supply.
The project represents a key step in Eritrea’s efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity and strengthen energy infrastructure.
