Vietnam Calls for ASEAN Leadership in Green Transition and Energy Security

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged ASEAN to take the lead in advancing renewable energy and strengthening regional energy security. Speaking at the ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) 2025, he emphasized the need for the bloc to prioritize sustainability, positioning renewable energy at the core of ASEANโ€™s long-term economic strategy.

A Vision for ASEANโ€™s Energy Future

As the region faces growing global uncertainties, the Prime Minister highlighted that ASEAN must reinforce its strategic self-control by fostering unity and strengthening economic resilience. He called on member states to accelerate the development of renewable energy, the green economy, and digital transformation while integrating deeper into global supply chains.

“ASEAN must lead the way in advancing clean energy solutions, circular economy principles, and deepening integration into global markets to become a strategic manufacturing hub,” he stated.

Three Breakthrough Measures for ASEANโ€™s Renewable Energy Expansion

To turn this vision into action, the Vietnamese leader proposed three key measures to enhance ASEANโ€™s energy security and sustainable development:

๐Ÿ”น Enhanced Decision-Making Mechanisms โ€“ ASEAN should adopt more flexible and effective governance structures while maintaining its consensus-driven approach. This will ensure the timely implementation of strategic renewable energy initiatives.

๐Ÿ”น Strengthened Public-Private Partnerships โ€“ Mobilizing private-sector investment is critical for scaling up clean energy infrastructure. The Prime Minister stressed the need to eliminate trade barriers, foster a secure digital economy, and fast-track the adoption of green technologies across ASEAN.

๐Ÿ”น Improved Regional Connectivity โ€“ Cross-border collaboration, infrastructure development, and institutional harmonization are key to integrating renewable energy sources within ASEANโ€™s power grid. He emphasized the need to streamline administrative processes to facilitate clean energy investments.

Vietnamโ€™s Commitment to ASEANโ€™s Renewable Energy Future

With ASEAN expected to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2045, the transition to sustainable energy is a priority. The region is making strides in solar, wind, and other renewable sources, and Vietnam has pledged its full support in accelerating ASEANโ€™s clean energy transformation.

“As the world faces energy security challenges, ASEAN has a historic opportunity to lead the global transition towards sustainability,” Chinh stated, emphasizing that unity, strategic planning, and decisive action will be key to shaping ASEANโ€™s energy future.
