Consumers Energy Kicks Off Construction of Blackman Solar Gardens Project in Michigan

The project is expected to begin generating clean energy before the end of the year.

“Consumers Energy is committed to reliably and affordably powering Michigan’s homes and businesses. In addition to its environmental benefits, renewable energy is increasingly cost-competitive and provides flexibility to respond to emerging needs, adapt to changing conditions and embrace innovative technology. By participating in these programs, customers can save money and contribute to a greener Michigan,” said David Hicks, Consumers Energy’s vice president of clean energy development.

The Blackman Solar Gardens facility will add capacity to Consumers Energy’s Solar Gardens community solar initiative, which allows customers to support renewable energy without needing to install solar panels themselves. The program offers a convenient and affordable way for participants to reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainability across Michigan.

Once completed, Blackman Solar will be the fourth community solar site owned and operated by Consumers Energy, joining existing installations in Cadillac, at Western Michigan University, and at Grand Valley State University. The new site will feature nearly 5,000 solar panels, with the capacity to produce enough electricity to power around 2,500 Solar Gardens participants.
