On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Ignacio Galán, Executive Chairman of Iberdrola and Chairman of Avangrid, attended a State Dinner at Lusail Palace in Doha, Qatar, hosted by U.S. President Donald J. Trump. During his visit, Mr. Galán also held meetings with several high-level officials, including U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Trade Ahmad Mohammed Al Sayed.
Avangrid, a leading energy company in the United States and part of the Iberdrola Group, had earlier in March 2025 announced a significant investment plan to strengthen and modernize the U.S. electrical grid. The company committed to investing $20 billion through 2030 in upgrading transmission and distribution infrastructure across key regions. Avangrid currently provides electric and natural gas services to over 3.4 million customers through eight regulated utility companies operating in New York and New England. Additionally, it owns and manages energy generation facilities in 23 U.S. states.
This investment comes at a critical time, as electricity demand in the United States is expected to grow by up to 50 percent between 2035 and 2050. In response to this anticipated growth, Iberdrola and Avangrid are prioritizing large-scale improvements in the electric grid to support increased capacity, resilience, and modernization. Avangrid already manages approximately $15 billion in regulated network assets in the Northeast.
As part of its current strategy, the company has committed $11.1 billion to active infrastructure projects in New York, Maine, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, focused on upgrading electric and gas transmission and distribution systems. An additional $9 billion in investments is planned over the next five years through new rate cases in New York, Connecticut, and Maine.
Beyond grid infrastructure, Iberdrola and Avangrid are also expanding their clean energy generation capabilities. The companies operate a portfolio of more than 75 generation facilities that collectively deliver over 10.5 gigawatts of energy to over 2 million customers across the United States. These facilities, along with future energy projects, will play a vital role in helping states and the nation meet growing electricity needs while also delivering economic and social benefits.
These include job creation, increased tax revenue, and support for local communities. Altogether, Iberdrola and Avangrid plan to invest over $20 billion in U.S. networks by 2030. They are also exploring more than $10 billion in potential growth opportunities in energy generation to further support the country’s transition to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
