Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, lauded Diu as a national model for clean energy transformation, during his visit to the Union Territory today. The Minister congratulated the district for becoming the first in the country to meet its entire power demand during daylight hours through solar energy alone.
With a combined installed capacity of 11.88 MW—comprising 9 MW ground-mounted systems and 2.88 MW rooftop installations—Diu has achieved complete daytime energy self-sufficiency through renewable sources. The Union Minister described this as a “milestone of national importance” in India’s energy transition.
High-Level Review and Strategy Session
The Minister chaired a review meeting with senior officials from the UT administration to assess the status and expansion plans for solar energy deployment. The session included a detailed presentation by T. Arun, Energy Secretary of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. He outlined the UT’s solar infrastructure, generation capacity, and the growing number of households benefiting from solar energy.
The review was also attended by Diu Collector Vivek Kumar, Deputy Collector Shivam Mishra, Executive Engineer Yogesh Tripathi, Paresh Patel, and other senior energy and administrative officials.
Site Visit to Fudam Solar Park
Following the meeting, the Minister visited key solar installations in the region, including the 9 MW Solar Park in Fudam. The facility has been instrumental in reducing transmission and distribution (T&D) losses and has enabled more affordable electricity tariffs for consumers in Diu.
Minister Joshi commended the efforts of UT Administrator Praful Patel, noting that his leadership and forward-thinking strategy were central to achieving this renewable energy milestone.
Financial and Social Impact
The Minister remarked that the capital expenditure on renewable infrastructure over the last decade has already been recovered through efficient power generation and distribution. He emphasized the importance of rapidly implementing the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aiming for full household saturation across the Union Territory.
He reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to scaling renewable energy across all regions, noting that Diu’s success story stands as an example for the rest of the country. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is steadfast in its resolve to bring clean energy to every home,” he said.
