Maxis Berhad has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with new strides in solar energy adoption, emissions efficiency, and sustainable network operations. In conjunction with World Environment Day, the company announced key progress updates aligning with the National Energy Transition Roadmap, which aims for 70% renewable energy installed capacity by 2050.
With a customer base of over 10.4 million mobile subscribers and 780,000 homes, Maxis is using its market reach to drive adoption of green energy solutions through its Maxis Home Solar initiative. This program offers consumers across Peninsular Malaysia access to rooftop solar power with low upfront costs, helping households reduce both electricity bills and carbon footprints.
“Managing our environmental footprint and enhancing operational efficiency are vital to Maxis’ long-term sustainability,” said Patrick Er, Director of Maxis Green Solutions and Chief People and Transformation Officer. “Through our solar initiatives for both our customers and own operations, we support the National Energy Transition Roadmap’s goal of achieving 70% renewable energy installed capacity by 2050.”
Driving Operational Emissions Reduction
Maxis’ operations are guided by ISO 14001 environmental standards. Since 2023, the company has integrated Electric Vehicles (EVs) into its field operations and established charging stations powered by solar at seven of its Technical Operations Centres (TOCs). This transition not only supports clean transportation but also reduces emissions linked to fuel use.
Additionally, Maxis is deploying off-grid solar systems at rural base stations in both Peninsular and East Malaysia. These systems have reduced reliance on diesel generators in remote areas, making telecom infrastructure more sustainable and energy-resilient.
Enhancing Network Energy Efficiency
To further optimize energy consumption, Maxis has modernized equipment across its base stations and TOCs. The introduction of Centralized Self-Organizing Network (C-SON) technology enables automatic shutdown of unused equipment, while high-efficiency rectifiers help minimize energy loss.
The company is also undertaking large-scale network consolidation and decommissioning of outdated equipment, especially in data centres and power plants. These efforts have allowed Maxis to limit energy usage growth to just 0.25% in 2024 despite an expansion in network infrastructure, significantly reducing overall emission intensity.
Greener Workspaces and Employee Engagement
At the office level, Maxis has reduced its emissions footprint through LED lighting retrofits, cable upgrades, and improved building energy management. These initiatives contributed to an 8% year-on-year reduction in office-related emissions in 2024. Additionally, the company has introduced public transport subsidies for employees to encourage greener commuting habits.
A Path Toward Sustainable Value Creation
Maxis’ comprehensive environmental strategy reflects its broader commitment to long-term sustainability and climate action. From supporting renewable energy adoption at the consumer level to optimizing internal operations, the company continues to align its growth with national and global sustainability goals.
As Maxis expands its green initiatives, it remains focused on building a resilient, low-carbon future for Malaysia—benefiting customers, employees, and the wider community.
