In a significant move to advance the Philippines’ renewable energy (RE) goals, Meralco has partnered with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and the Quezon City local government to streamline net metering and distributed energy resource (DER) applications, aiming to broaden RE access for households and businesses.
The tripartite agreement, signed on August 4, is designed to develop scalable public-private models that align with the national targets of 35% RE share in the energy mix by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
Under the agreement:
- Meralco will establish a dedicated booth within Quezon City Hall to assist residents with net metering and DER applications.
- The Quezon City LGU will provide logistical support.
- The ERC will extend technical and regulatory guidance to ensure smooth implementation.
“This partnership brings together our shared commitment to make energy cleaner, more reliable, and more accessible,” said Quezon City Mayor Josefina “Joy” G. Belmonte. “We are creating clearer processes and stronger support systems to enable more stakeholders to join the clean energy transition.”
As of end-July 2025, Quezon City leads Meralco’s franchise area with nearly 2,500 net metering customers, both in terms of volume and installed RE capacity.
ERC Chairperson Monalisa C. Dimalanta emphasized the broader vision of empowering citizens: “The net metering program allows ordinary Filipinos to take part in shaping our country’s energy future.”
Meralco has also committed to supporting information and education campaigns and to sharing its expertise in RE interconnection to accelerate adoption further.
“Meralco remains fully committed to supporting the government’s renewable energy thrust and making a lasting national impact,” said Ferdinand O. Geluz, Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at Meralco.
This initiative follows a similar partnership with Pasig City, as Meralco seeks to replicate and scale successful RE collaborations throughout its franchise area.
