SolarPower Europe has launched the Battery Storage Europe Platform, a significant new initiative aimed at strengthening the business case and regulatory framework for battery storage across the European Union. This platform will serve as a dedicated advocacy body for the battery storage sector, working to ensure that the interests of battery storage companies are effectively represented at the EU level. Its core mission includes engaging with policymakers, and helping shape legislative, trade, and investment frameworks that support the manufacturing and deployment of battery storage solutions.

Until now, battery storage companies lacked specific representation within EU institutions. This platform addresses that gap by creating a central voice for the industry. With SolarPower Europe already established as the leading advocate for solar energy in the EU and given that solar is a major driver of demand for battery storage, the organisation is well-positioned to bring together its network to support the growth of a more flexible and integrated energy system.

Juhi Dion Sud, newly appointed Head of the Battery Storage Europe Platform, said in a statement, “Battery storage is no longer optional – it is essential. Without urgent action, the EU risks stalling its energy transition. We are calling for a tenfold increase in battery storage by 2030. This is vital to sustain the rapid growth of solar and other renewables, and to ensure the EU’s energy security, resilience and competitiveness. The EU currently has just over 50 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS). To stay on track for the 2030 renewables targets, this must increase to between 500 and 780 GWh. Our core asks: 10X more battery storage in 5 years.”

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, mentioned, “Solar and storage are the perfect pair. As solar installations soar across Europe, battery storage must grow at the same pace. We’re delighted to welcome Juhi Dion Sud to lead this Platform – she brings over 20 years of legal and strategic experience, with a strong focus on EU and international trade policy.”

The launch of the platform builds on the growing momentum generated by SolarPower Europe’s annual European Market Outlook for Battery Storage, a widely recognised reference in the energy sector that tracks developments and market trends in battery storage. The Battery Storage Europe Platform was launched with the support of several founding strategic partners, including Renewable Energy Insurance Broker, Statkraft, and SUNOTEC. The initiative began with a hybrid strategy day held in Brussels, which brought together over 50 representatives from leading battery storage companies, marking the start of a collaborative effort to drive the future of energy storage in Europe.
