AEON CO., LTD. and JERA Co., Inc. have signed a memorandum to launch a joint initiative aimed at advancing a decarbonized society. The collaboration aligns with AEONโs Decarbonization Vision, formulated in 2018, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all AEON stores to zero by 2040 through energy conservation, energy creation, and initiatives across stores, products, logistics, and customer engagement. JERA, under its โJERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050โ commitment, targets net-zero CO2 emissions from its operations by 2050 using a combination of renewable energy and zero-emissions thermal solutions.
As part of this initiative, AEON and JERA will supply surplus electricity from multiple rooftop solar installations, aggregated by JERA Cross and delivered through Chubu Electric Power Miraiz Co., Inc., to AEON Retail stores and offices in the Chubu region starting August 1, 2025. By using rooftops of existing buildings, the project avoids additional land use and environmental impact, such as deforestation or disruption of local ecosystems, while making efficient use of underutilized local renewable energy. Incorporating newly operating solar installations in the region, the initiative is expected to supply 467,000 kWh annually, reducing AEON Retailโs CO2 emissions by approximately 197 tonnes per year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 150 households.
This project is intended to serve as a model for regional coexistence and a circular economy and will eventually be expanded to AEON stores and offices nationwide. Beyond rooftop solar, JERA will continue collaborating with AEON to provide a broad range of environmentally conscious decarbonization solutions that meet AEONโs standards. Through this partnership, both companies aim to support AEONโs Decarbonization Vision while contributing to a sustainable, low-carbon society.
