HEINEKEN, Rondo Energy, and EDP have signed an agreement to deploy a 100 MWh Rondo Heat Battery (RHB) at HEINEKEN’s Central de Cervejas e Bebidas Brewery and Malting Plant in Portugal. This will be the largest heat battery installation in the global beverage industry, delivering continuous renewable steam to power HEINEKEN’s brewing operations.

The Rondo Heat Battery captures intermittent renewable electricity, converts it into high-temperature heat, and stores it for 24-hour zero-carbon steam generation. At the Lisbon facility, it will supply 7 MW of steam for production processes, powered by renewable electricity from both on-site solar and the grid. Under a Heat-as-a-Service model, EDP will provide the steam to HEINEKEN, with Rondo supplying the battery technology and EDP managing the renewable power integration.

The project allows HEINEKEN to significantly cut its carbon emissions while maintaining existing brewing operations. The renewable steam produced by the Rondo system is functionally identical to fossil-fuel-generated steam—delivering the same performance without the environmental impact.

“By combining our strengths with EDP and Rondo, we’re unlocking new ways to power our brewery operations more efficiently,” said Magne Setnes, Chief Supply Chain Officer at HEINEKEN. “This project not only helps us reduce our reliance on conventional energy, it shows how practical innovation and strong partnerships can deliver meaningful improvements across our supply chain.”
