GenVision, Tatanga Energy, and AMDG Energy have entered into an agreement to jointly develop a large-scale renewable energy project in Zambia’s Copperbelt region. The initiative involves the construction of a 300-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power plant, complemented by up to 800 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage. Located approximately 10 kilometers north of Kitwe, this project is set to become one of the most significant renewable energy developments in the region, marking a major step forward in Zambia’s clean energy transition.

GenVision, a joint venture between commodities giant Glencore and renewable energy developer and investor Nvision, will play a central role in the project. The company operates as a fully integrated independent power producer, managing every stage of the project lifecycle—from development and engineering to financing, construction, and long-term operations. This model allows for faster project delivery, cost efficiency, and enhanced reliability of power generation, aligning with Africa’s broader goals for sustainable energy expansion.

Tatanga Energy, an experienced developer and operator of renewable energy projects across sub-Saharan Africa, brings a strong track record of successful projects to the partnership. The company has been involved in notable developments such as the Sable Solar PV Park and the largest wind power project in Zimbabwe. With its deep technical knowledge, financial acumen, and strong project execution capabilities, Tatanga Energy will provide valuable regional experience and local insight, supported by a wide network of advisors and industry experts.

AMDG Energy has also been a key player in responding to the Zambian government’s call for accelerated renewable energy development to address the country’s ongoing power shortages. The company focuses on large-scale solar and wind energy projects designed to strengthen energy security and promote long-term sustainability. By leveraging its professional resources, industry experience, and extensive partnerships, AMDG Energy aims to contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s and the region’s energy transition efforts.

The Northern Power Project, as the initiative is known, is expected to provide a significant boost to Zambia’s electricity supply once completed. It will play a vital role in supporting industrial growth in the Copperbelt—one of the country’s most important economic regions—by providing clean, affordable, and reliable energy. The addition of large-scale battery storage will enhance grid stability and help balance supply and demand, further improving energy resilience.

Speaking on behalf of the partners, GenVision stated that the collaboration represents a shared commitment to accelerating Zambia’s transition toward reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective energy. The company emphasized that by combining GenVision’s integrated project delivery model with Tatanga Energy’s operational expertise and AMDG Energy’s local presence, the partnership aims to deliver tangible economic and social benefits, strengthening the nation’s energy infrastructure and supporting long-term growth. Further announcements regarding the project’s progress will be made as it moves through the stages of detailed design, permitting, and financing.
