Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the third-highest state in India for rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, following Gujarat and Maharashtra. The state also ranks second nationally in the number of applications received, according to an official statement.
A government spokesperson said the scheme has significantly transformed rural and economically weaker regions of the state by providing affordable and uninterrupted electricity. As of now, 2,75,936 households across Uttar Pradesh have installed rooftop solar systems, helping reduce dependence on conventional power and enabling families to access free electricity.
The spokesperson noted that the initiative has lowered household expenses by 15–20%, allowing families to allocate more funds toward education, healthcare, and essential savings.
The scheme has also boosted small businesses such as shops, flour mills, grocery stores, and mobile repair outlets. Previously hampered by frequent power cuts, many local enterprises now report uninterrupted operations, stable income, and improved employment opportunities.
As of October 31, the state has disbursed ₹1,808.09 crore in subsidies under the scheme, which has strengthened public confidence and accelerated adoption. Major districts—including Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur Nagar, and Bareilly—have more than 8,000 rooftop solar units combined. Lucknow leads with 4,271 installations.
Officials said the state will continue to scale up adoption to further drive clean energy access and sustainable development.
