The Government of India’s flagship rooftop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), has achieved installations across 23.96 lakh households — nearly one-fourth of its national target of one crore households set for FY 2026–27. The information was shared by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

As of December 3, 2025, the National Portal for the scheme has received 53,54,099 applications, while 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems have been successfully installed under the programme.

For FY 2025–26 alone, the government aims to include an additional 35 lakh households under the scheme. To accelerate progress, several measures have been implemented, including a completely online application-to-subsidy process and collateral-free loans offered by nationalized banks at a concessional 6% annual interest rate with a 10-year tenure.

The regulatory framework has also been simplified with key relaxations such as waived technical feasibility checks, automatic load enhancement up to 10 kW, and inclusion of RESCO and Utility-led Aggregation models. Net metering agreements have now been integrated into the National Portal workflow.

Additional efforts include streamlining vendor registrations, nationwide awareness campaigns across TV, radio, print, and regional media, and skill-development initiatives aimed at strengthening workforce capacity.

Progress under the scheme is being closely monitored through coordinated reviews with state governments and DISCOMs. A grievance redressal system, including a multilingual call centre (15555), has also been set up to assist beneficiaries.

The demand-driven scheme is open to all residential consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection, enabling them to apply for installation and subsidy benefits through the official National Portal.
