PetroChina has once again set a world record in the field of perovskite solar technology. On December 1, the New Energy Photovoltaic Technology Team at PetroChina Engineering Materials Research Institute announced that its 1.68 eV wide-bandgap perovskite solar cell achieved a certified photoelectric conversion efficiency of 25.05%. This achievement, verified by an authoritative third-party testing organization, marks the third time the company has broken the global efficiency record for perovskite solar cells. The breakthrough highlights PetroChinaโs leadership in perovskite photovoltaic research and strengthens its plans to expand large-scale clean energy projects and distributed power solutions in oil fields.
Perovskite solar cells are considered a next-generation technology in the global photovoltaic industry due to their potential for very high efficiency. For single-junction perovskite cells, the theoretical efficiency limit can reach up to 33%, while tandem perovskite cells have the potential to achieve 43%, significantly higher than the 29.4% efficiency ceiling of conventional crystalline silicon solar cells. Higher efficiency not only improves energy output but also lowers electricity costs. Industry studies show that each 1-percentage-point increase in solar cell efficiency can reduce the cost of electricity by 3โ5%, making efficiency improvements critical for economic and sustainable solar power adoption.
The advancement of perovskite solar cells is a major focus of global research, as overcoming technical challenges in this field can accelerate the production of clean energy. PetroChinaโs record-setting achievement demonstrates progress in addressing these challenges, providing a strong foundation for the company to drive innovation and support the transition to distributed and large-scale clean energy solutions.
