Coal Ministry Commits ₹8,500 Crore To Promote Cleaner Energy And Sustainability Initiatives

The Ministry of Coal has announced a major investment of ₹8,500 crore to accelerate India’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy pathways. This initiative is part of the country’s broader strategy to achieve its Net-Zero 2070 target and reflects the government’s focus on combining energy security with environmental responsibility.

The investment will be used to support multiple projects aimed at reducing the environmental impact of coal while promoting alternative and renewable energy sources. A significant portion of the funding has been allocated to the National Coal Gasification Mission. This program will support coal and lignite gasification projects, which offer cleaner energy alternatives by reducing reliance on conventional coal combustion. Gasification technologies are expected to lower emissions and provide more sustainable energy solutions, helping India move toward a greener energy mix.

Another key component of the Ministry’s plan is Mission GREEN, which focuses on ecological restoration and environmental sustainability. Under this program, nearly 3,000 hectares of land across coal-bearing regions have been brought under plantation. This initiative aims to restore degraded mining areas, improve biodiversity, and strengthen the ecological balance in affected regions. By promoting green cover and environmental conservation, Mission GREEN complements the country’s larger sustainability goals and supports rural communities impacted by mining activities.

In addition to gasification and plantation initiatives, the Ministry highlighted the expansion of renewable energy capacity within the coal sector. Coal public sector units have collectively installed over 2 GW of renewable energy, marking a significant step toward reducing dependence on fossil fuels and integrating sustainable power into India’s energy landscape. This move also reinforces the government’s commitment to promoting clean energy while maintaining energy availability for the growing economy.

These combined efforts demonstrate the Ministry of Coal’s comprehensive approach to sustainability. By integrating cleaner energy technologies, large-scale afforestation, and renewable energy deployment, the government is preparing the coal sector for a future that balances energy needs with environmental stewardship.
