Sonnedix, a global renewable energy company with over 11.6 GW of capacity, has signed an agreement with VW Kraftwerk GmbH, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, to supply Guarantees of Origin (GOs) from renewable electricity generated in Spain. The partnership is aimed at supporting Volkswagen’s efforts to decarbonize its European operations.

The renewable certificates will be sourced from the Sonnedix Covatillas photovoltaic complex, which includes the Covatillas 1, 5, and 6 plants located in Minglanilla, Graja de Iniesta, and Puebla del Salvador in Cuenca. The 150 MW complex, which began operations in June 2025, is one of Sonnedix’s largest solar projects in the Iberian region and demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering large-scale renewable solutions.

Under the agreement, Sonnedix will provide 104 GWh of renewable energy certificates per year for ten years. This volume is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 25,000 households and is expected to reduce approximately 37,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. This contract represents Sonnedix’s first long-term GOs sales agreement and strengthens its position as a strategic partner for large corporations pursuing decarbonization. It follows other major agreements, including a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Renfe, supplying 420 GWh of renewable energy annually for rail operations.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, highlighted that global companies require reliable, certified renewable solutions that align with their climate commitments. He noted that the agreement with VW Kraftwerk GmbH demonstrates Sonnedix’s ability to offer a range of energy products and services, from tailored energy contracts to GOs, providing immediate value while contributing to the decarbonization of key sectors such as the automotive industry.

Gerson González, Managing Director of Sonnedix Spain, emphasized Spain’s strategic importance as a renewable energy hub in Europe. He added that projects like Covatillas showcase Sonnedix’s focus on customer-centric solutions and its commitment to supporting Volkswagen’s environmental roadmap, making renewable energy generated in Spain available to the European industry.

The Covatillas complex, inaugurated in June 2025, features 274,260 bifacial modules, 3,680 2V trackers, and an on-site 150 MVA substation. The facility generates an average of 298,500 MWh annually, sufficient to power 71,000 households, and avoids more than 108,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Its construction created over 200 direct jobs, involved strong local engagement, and incorporated advanced biodiversity protection measures, demonstrating Sonnedix’s focus on environmental and social impact alongside technological excellence.
