The International Hydropower Association (IHA) has welcomed DANS Group, a leading Indian renewable energy developer, as its newest member, marking a significant step in the company’s engagement with the global hydropower community.

Founded in 2005, DANS Group specializes in hydropower projects that deliver value beyond electricity generation, including community development and regional economic growth. Headquartered in Gurgaon, India, the company currently operates two major hydropower assets in Sikkim: the 96 MW Jorethang Loop Hydropower Project and the 97 MW Tashiding Hydropower Project, which together contribute 193 MW of renewable electricity to India’s national grid.

DANS Group’s IHA membership comes as India accelerates its energy transition, expanding hydropower to complement variable renewable energy sources and strengthen grid stability. According to the World Hydropower Outlook, India is emerging as a global leader in pumped storage hydropower, with plans to add 51 GW of capacity by 2032.

To support this growth, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has fast-tracked approvals for six pumped storage projects totaling 7.5 GW in 2024–25 and plans to approve 13 additional projects (22 GW) in 2025–26.

Through its IHA membership, DANS Group intends to collaborate with international hydropower leaders, enhance technical expertise, adopt global best practices, and increase its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The company’s hydropower achievements have received national recognition. In early 2024, the Tashiding Hydropower Project won the 4th India Green Energy Award for Outstanding Renewable Energy Producer – Hydro, presented by the Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE).

Commenting on the development, Shubh Nanda, Director at DANS Group, said: “Hydropower enables long-term sustainability by transforming India’s water resources into clean energy while supporting economic development and energy self-reliance.”

Eddie Rich, CEO of the International Hydropower Association, welcomed DANS Group, highlighting the company’s expertise in delivering complex hydropower projects while prioritizing environmental stewardship and community engagement.
