AMG Critical Materials N.V., announced that its subsidiary, AMG LIVA, will install its industrial battery system, the Hybrid Energy Storage System (Hybrid ESS), at Aramco’s Bulk Plant in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The Hybrid ESS combines Lithium-Ion and Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB) with artificial intelligence routines and self-learning algorithms. This integrated system is designed to improve the efficiency, safety, reliability, and lifespan of the batteries. The Hybrid ESS will be connected to an existing solar power plant at Aramco’s Tabuk facility.
The installation demonstrates how LIVA’s Hybrid ESS can contribute to reducing carbon emissions from energy supply and potentially enable energy independence from the grid at any time of day. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals by supporting carbon emissions reduction, expanding renewable energy deployment, and enhancing energy storage capabilities.
This project complements the broader strategy of the IK Metals Reclamation and Catalyst Manufacturing Project, known as the “IK Supercenter.” The IK Supercenter is a large-scale recycling facility established through a joint venture between Shell, AMG Recycling B.V., and their local partner, the United Company for Industry (UCI), under the Advanced Circular Materials Company. The facility is designed to recycle metals, including vanadium concentrate from spent catalysts and gasification ashes from Aramco’s Jazan Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Plant. This recycling approach reduces the carbon footprint compared to traditional mining processes.
The IK Supercenter will also include a vanadium electrolyte production plant, which is expected to supply the Kingdom’s vanadium flow battery market. This development supports a fully integrated, locally produced value chain in Saudi Arabia, advancing both sustainable energy solutions and the growth of domestic energy storage technologies.
