Canadian Solar Delivers First Grid-Connected BESS In Japan Next To Naebo Substation, Supporting JEPX And Balancing Market Operations In Hokkaido

Canadian Solar Inc. has announced that its energy storage division, e-STORAGE, has successfully delivered its first grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) in Japan. The new system, installed in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, has a rated output of 2 MW and a total energy capacity of 8.25 MWh (DC). This marks the debut of e-STORAGE’s battery technology in the Japanese market and reinforces Canadian Solar’s long-term commitment to supporting Japan’s clean energy goals.

The project was developed by Canadian Solar Projects K.K. and is located next to the Naebo substation. It was awarded under Hokkaido Electric Power Network’s 2023 public land leasing program. The system is designed to participate in both the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) and the Balancing Market (EPRX), helping improve grid flexibility, support the integration of renewable energy, and enhance overall market stability in Hokkaido. The installation is built around e-STORAGE’s SolBank platform. Equipment was delivered to the site in September 2025, and final commissioning began in December 2025.

e-STORAGE handled the full design, engineering, and commissioning of the BESS and will continue to provide long-term maintenance and inspection services for the duration of its operational life. The company also holds Japan’s government-recognized Wide Area Management Certificate, which authorizes it to manage end-of-life handling of lithium-ion battery systems nationwide. This ensures that the storage system follows a full-lifecycle approach aligned with Japan’s regulatory and utility market requirements.

Colin Parkin, President of Canadian Solar and President of e-STORAGE, said the project represents an important step in supporting Japan’s energy transition. He emphasized that e-STORAGE is committed to delivering reliable, market-ready energy storage solutions that help strengthen grid resilience and meet the evolving technical and regulatory demands of the Japanese market.
