Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has announced the successful acquisition of Bellary Davanagere Power Transmission Limited (BDPTL) on February 12, 2026. The acquisition comes after POWERGRID was selected as the successful bidder through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) route. The project was earlier managed by REC Power Development & Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL), which acted as the Bid Process Coordinator.
The project has been awarded on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis. BDPTL is a special-purpose vehicle formed to implement a transmission system in Karnataka. The main objective of the project is to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure and support the integration of additional renewable energy capacity. The transmission system is expected to facilitate the evacuation of about 0.25 GW of renewable energy at Davanagere and 2.75 GW at Bellary, helping improve grid reliability and support green energy growth in the region.
The scope of work under the project includes the construction of a 400 kV double-circuit transmission line across Karnataka. It also involves associated line bays and augmentation works at the Davanagere and Bellary pooling stations. These developments are aimed at ensuring the smooth transmission of power generated from renewable energy projects to the grid.
POWERGRID has acquired a 100 percent shareholding in BDPTL at an aggregate value of around Rs. 13.02 crore. The transaction includes 50,000 equity shares with a face value of Rs. 10 each, along with the company’s assets and liabilities as on the date of acquisition. The final acquisition price will be subject to adjustments based on the audited financial statements of BDPTL.
BDPTL was incorporated on September 25, 2025, in line with the Ministry of Power’s guidelines to promote competition in transmission projects. As a newly formed entity, it has not recorded any turnover in the past three years and has not yet started commercial operations. Going forward, BDPTL will approach the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission for the grant of a transmission license and approval of transmission charges.
POWERGRID clarified that the acquisition is not a related party transaction and aligns with its core transmission business.
