Hindustan Power Plans 5 GW Expansion by 2028 with Focus on Solar and Storage

Hindustan Power, led by Chairman Ratul Puri, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to build a 5 GW energy portfolio by 2028, marking a significant push in India’s renewable transition and energy infrastructure expansion.

Addressing stakeholders and industry observers, Puri outlined a strategic growth plan that focuses on scaling renewable assets — primarily solar — alongside critical energy storage capabilities. The initiative aims to position Hindustan Power as a major integrated energy player, balancing capacity additions with financial prudence and operational execution.

According to statements from the company, the 5 GW target will be achieved through a mix of greenfield projects, strategic partnerships, and project acquisitions, with solar power forming the core of the development pipeline. Alongside solar capacity expansion, the company is also prioritizing energy storage solutions to enhance grid stability and optimize dispatchability of intermittent renewable generation.

Hindustan Power has already made headway toward this goal, having secured nearly 1 GW of solar projects and approximately 750 MWh of battery energy storage systems, sources say. These early wins are expected to bolster investor confidence and build momentum for larger-scale rollouts.

Industry analysts note that the company’s strategy reflects broader market dynamics, where developers are increasingly blending generation assets with storage to enhance project viability and align with India’s clean energy targets.

Puri emphasized that achieving the 5 GW mark will require disciplined execution, robust financing strategies, and technological integration to ensure long-term asset performance.

With India’s renewable capacity trajectory accelerating and policy support strengthening, Hindustan Power’s 2028 roadmap is poised to be closely watched by investors and competitors alike as it seeks to become a significant contributor to the country’s energy transition.
