A new partnership aimed at supporting local communities and expanding renewable energy has been announced by Pivot Energy. The company has entered into a multi-year collaboration with Sustain Our Future Foundation to fund community programs that focus on environmental sustainability and economic opportunity in areas where Pivot operates.
Through this partnership, funding will be directed toward projects that improve local infrastructure, support healthier environments, and create new economic opportunities. Key initiatives include home weatherization programs, flood-mitigation projects, and workforce development programs designed to help residents access careers in the growing clean-energy sector.
The collaboration is connected to Pivot Energy’s five-year framework agreement with Microsoft. Under this agreement, Pivot plans to develop up to 500 megawatts of community-scale solar projects across the United States between 2025 and 2029. The arrangement represents Pivot’s largest renewable energy certificate (REC) agreement and one of its most significant efforts to combine renewable energy development with community investment.
The agreement is also important for Microsoft’s clean energy strategy. It represents the company’s first large distributed generation framework focused on community-scale solar. By linking new renewable energy generation with the company’s electricity consumption, the initiative supports Microsoft’s broader climate goal of cutting its Scope 3 emissions by more than half by 2030.
As part of the partnership, the first round of grants has already been distributed. A total of 400,000 dollars has been awarded to local nonprofit organizations and social enterprises in Garrett County, Maryland, to support projects that improve environmental conditions and strengthen local communities.
One of the recipients is the Garrett County Community Action Committee, which works to support working families in the region. Funding will help the organization expand programs that focus on home electrification and weatherization upgrades. These improvements aim to increase energy efficiency in homes, reduce energy costs for households, and create safer and healthier living conditions for residents.
Another grant recipient is the Garrett Soil Conservation District. This organization focuses on improving community resilience through environmental conservation. The funding will allow the district to implement local flood-mitigation initiatives, provide resources that encourage responsible land management, and involve residents in conservation efforts that help protect homes, farmland, and local waterways.
The partnership is also investing in workforce development through scholarship support for students enrolled in the wind turbine technician training program at Garrett College. The funding will help local students access training in renewable energy technologies and open pathways to stable, well-paying careers in the clean-energy sector.
Additional grants are supporting local social enterprises that promote sustainability and economic activity in the region. One of these organizations is Clean Compost LLC, which focuses on strengthening the circular economy. The funding will help expand community composting programs that divert organic waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide educational opportunities for residents and local businesses.
Another beneficiary is All Earth Eco Tours. Support for this organization will help promote environmental education and eco-tourism activities that encourage outdoor recreation while also supporting local economic development. These programs aim to help residents and visitors build a deeper connection with the natural landscapes of Garrett County.
According to Tom Hunt, the partnership demonstrates how renewable energy development can deliver benefits beyond electricity generation. He explained that collaboration between energy developers, corporate partners, and community-focused organizations makes it possible to ensure renewable energy projects also contribute to the wellbeing of local communities. Hunt described the initiative as an important milestone that highlights how purpose-driven solar projects can create meaningful and lasting local impact.
The grantmaking strategy for the program is being led by the Sustain Our Future Foundation. The nonprofit works with renewable energy developers and corporate partners to ensure that renewable energy investments also produce measurable social and environmental benefits for the communities involved. In this case, the organization is coordinating the community engagement process for the 500 MW solar initiative developed by Pivot Energy in partnership with Microsoft.
Yinka N. Bode-George explained that companies can play an important role in strengthening local climate resilience by developing community benefit plans alongside renewable energy projects. She emphasized that the foundation’s role is to ensure that local communities help shape how funding is used, allowing investments to reflect real local priorities and needs. Microsoft also highlighted the broader vision behind the partnership. Danielle Decatur stated that the company’s collaboration with Pivot Energy aims to bring 500 megawatts of new solar power to around 100 communities across 20 states over the next five years.
She noted that the initiative is designed to deliver more than just renewable energy. It is also intended to create new job opportunities, improve access to essential resources, and strengthen community resilience. The first projects are beginning in Garrett County Maryland, where local priorities are already shaping how community funding is used. Through this combined approach of clean energy development and local investment, the partnership aims to build stronger, more sustainable communities while accelerating the transition to renewable energy across the United States.
