Customers of Ameren Illinois are expected to experience improved electricity reliability after the company completed a new transmission substation near downtown Belleville. The newly built facility has been placed into service to strengthen the local transmission network and help reduce the chances of power outages in the area. The new installation, known as the Goalby Substation, is located at 1080 South 20th Street, just west of downtown Belleville.
The substation is named after Bob Goalby, a Belleville native and well-known PGA golfer. The facility plays an important role in the local power grid by acting as an additional connection point in the transmission system. This allows electricity to be rerouted more efficiently across the network, which can help restore service faster during storms or other events that disrupt power.
According to Harman Ormani, who served as the project manager for the new facility, the substation was developed after careful analysis of the regionโs transmission infrastructure. Engineers studied how electricity moves through the system and determined that building the substation at this location would improve reliability for a large number of customers in and around Belleville.
The additional transmission connection makes the local grid stronger and more flexible, which helps maintain stable power delivery even during challenging conditions. One of the most notable aspects of the project is that it is the first gas-insulated substation on Amerenโs transmission system. Traditional substations usually rely on air-insulated equipment that requires a larger amount of open space.
In contrast, gas-insulated substations use specialized electrical components enclosed within sealed and compact units filled with insulating gas. This advanced design significantly reduces the amount of land needed for the facility while still providing equal or greater operational capability. Because of this design, the Goalby Substation occupies only about one-third of the space typically required for a conventional transmission substation.
The smaller footprint made it possible to build the facility in a location that would otherwise have presented engineering challenges. The site sits above historic mine shafts that remain underground from Bellevilleโs earlier coal mining activities. Building a large conventional substation in such an area could have required extensive engineering work to address potential ground stability issues.
The compact structure of the gas-insulated system helped reduce these complications. By using equipment housed within sealed enclosures, engineers were able to design the facility in a way that minimized the amount of structural work needed to safely build above the former mine tunnels. This approach helped control project costs while still maintaining high standards for safety, reliability, and performance.
Ormani explained that gas-insulated substations are often used in densely populated urban environments where space is limited, such as crowded city centers. Although Belleville does not have the same space constraints as a large metropolitan area, the underground mining history made the compact design especially useful for this project.
The construction of the new substation also holds personal significance for Dan Crockett, who worked on the design of the facility. Crockett has lived in Belleville his entire life and has been working as an engineer with Ameren for seven years. For him, the project represents the first time he has helped design infrastructure that directly serves his own community.
Crockett described the experience as particularly meaningful because it allowed him to contribute to improvements in the city where he grew up. Seeing the project move from design to completion in his hometown has been a rewarding milestone in his career. He also expressed pride in Amerenโs investment in Belleville and believes the new substation will strengthen the reliability of electricity service for local residents and businesses.
Beyond improving current service reliability, the Goalby Substation is also expected to support the long-term development of the area. A stronger and more flexible transmission system helps accommodate future growth in electricity demand as communities expand and industries develop. By enhancing the local power infrastructure, the project positions Belleville to support economic growth while maintaining dependable energy service.
Overall, the new substation represents an important infrastructure upgrade for the region.
