Kansai Transmission and Distribution (KTD), a leading Japanese power transmission and distribution utility, has signed an investment agreement worth approximately ₹160 crore with OMC Power to strengthen distributed renewable energy infrastructure in India. Through the investment, KTD will acquire a 10% equity stake in OMC Power, marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth strategy.
The investment makes KTD the fourth major Japanese investor in OMC Power, joining global conglomerates such as Mitsui & Co., Chubu Electric Power, and Honda Motor Co.. With this partnership, OMC Power becomes one of the few companies globally to have four major Japanese corporations as shareholders.
OMC Power has been a pioneer in distributed renewable energy solutions, focusing on last-mile energy access and decentralised energy infrastructure across India. The company currently operates across more than 700 locations and aims to expand its distributed clean energy capacity to 1 GWp in the coming years.
Commenting on the development, Rohit Chandra, Co-Founder and CEO of OMC Power, described the investment as a transformative milestone in the company’s journey toward becoming a global grassroots energy transition enterprise. He noted that the partnership with KTD would help accelerate OMC’s 1 GWp ambition and enable the delivery of reliable and clean electricity to underserved communities.
The collaboration brings together KTD’s global expertise in power transmission and distribution with OMC Power’s decade-long experience in distributed renewable energy and grassroots operations. By combining these strengths, the companies aim to develop scalable and efficient decentralised energy solutions while improving network reliability and power distribution efficiency.
The partnership also aligns with the growing momentum for renewable energy adoption in Uttar Pradesh, which has already installed more than 2.5 GW of solar capacity. OMC Power’s strong presence at the grassroots level is expected to support the state’s efforts to expand access to reliable and clean electricity.
Takaharu Ito, Director in charge of Power Distribution and Information Technology at Kansai Transmission and Distribution, said the company is pleased to support OMC Power’s mission of providing reliable and clean energy to communities across India. He added that KTD will leverage its expertise in power distribution technologies and operational systems developed in Japan to help OMC achieve its 1 GWp distributed energy target.
Through this collaboration, OMC Power and Kansai Transmission and Distribution aim to develop a scalable distributed energy model capable of supporting India’s growing energy demand, strengthening grassroots economic development, and contributing to the country’s broader renewable energy transition.
