Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu), in collaboration with JR Hakata City and Daiwa Energy, has commissioned one of the largest rooftop solar power installations in the Kyushu region at the LOGI STATION logistics facility in Ogori City.

The project has a total installed capacity of approximately 6.6 MW and is expected to generate around 7.7 million kWh of electricity annually in its first year. The installation is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 3,457 tonnes per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of nearly 1,800 households.

A key feature of the project is the simultaneous deployment of both onsite and offsite power purchase agreement (PPA) models within the same facility, enabling full utilization of rooftop space and optimized renewable energy distribution.

Under the onsite PPA model, implemented on the northern section of the roof, Daiwa Energy has developed a 3.2 MW solar installation spanning over 19,000 square metres. The electricity generated will be primarily consumed within the logistics facility, with surplus power supplied to the grid under Japanโ€™s Feed-in Premium (FIP) scheme.

The southern section operates under an offsite PPA model, where JR Hakata City acts as the power producer and Daiwa Energy serves as the EPC contractor. This segment includes a 3.3 MW solar system covering more than 21,000 square metres. Electricity generated is sold to the grid and subsequently repurchased as renewable energy to supply commercial facilities operated by JR Hakata City.

The LOGI STATION Fukuoka Ogori facility, developed by JR Kyushu, spans a site area of approximately 74,829 square metres, with a total floor area exceeding 85,000 square metres.

The initiative aligns with the companiesโ€™ broader sustainability strategies. JR Hakata City is targeting more than 30% renewable energy usage across its commercial facilities by 2030, while Daiwa Energy continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio through solar EPC and generation projects across Japan.

The project marks a significant step in integrating innovative PPA structures within large-scale logistics infrastructure, supporting Japanโ€™s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
