The Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) has committed €4.3 million in funding to support Afreenergy Solar in expanding solar and battery storage deployment in Senegal.

The investment, made through PIDG’s infrastructure development arm InfraCo, will enable Afreenergy Solar to roll out up to 30 MW of solar capacity along with 10 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The projects will primarily target commercial and industrial (C&I) customers, including sectors such as agro-industry and logistics.

Afreenergy Solar focuses on providing on-site renewable energy solutions through flexible models such as lease-to-own arrangements and power purchase agreements (PPAs). These solutions are aimed at improving energy reliability for businesses while reducing reliance on diesel-based power and lowering operational costs.

The initiative comes at a time when many regions across sub-Saharan Africa continue to face challenges related to unreliable grid supply and high electricity costs. Solar-plus-storage systems are increasingly emerging as a viable alternative to ensure consistent and cost-effective power for industrial users.

The Senegal deployment is expected to serve as a strategic platform for Afreenergy Solar’s expansion across West and Central Africa, while also attracting further private investment into distributed clean energy solutions.

The development aligns with Senegal’s broader energy transition goals, which include increasing the share of renewable energy in its overall energy mix in the coming years.
