Arevon Energy, Inc., a major U.S. developer, owner, and operator of renewable energy assets, has begun construction on the Cormorant Energy Storage Project in Daly City, California. The facility will have a capacity of 250 MW and 1,000 MWh, making it one of the largest battery storage projects in the state. When it becomes operational in 2027, the $600 million project will be able to supply enough stored electricity to power around 321,000 homes for up to four hours, helping support grid reliability during peak demand.

Arevon will own and operate the Cormorant project, which is backed by a long-term offtake agreement with MCE, an electricity provider that serves more than 1.8 million people and businesses in Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, and Solano counties. The project was originally designed with a capacity of 188 MW and 752 MWh, but has since been expanded to 250 MW and 1,000 MWh. The additional capacity is also contracted to MCE under a long-term agreement.

The storage system will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, known for its safety, efficiency, and durability. Primoris Services Corporation’s Renewables group will serve as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor. During peak construction, the project is expected to create around 175 jobs, supporting local employment and stimulating the Daly City economy. Local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and retail stores are also expected to benefit from increased activity. Over its lifetime, the project is set to generate over $73 million in property tax revenue, which will go toward funding schools, infrastructure, and public services.

Justin Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Arevon, noted that beginning construction represents a major step forward for both the project and the community. He highlighted that large-scale storage projects like Cormorant play an important role in California’s energy transition by storing electricity when supply is high and releasing it when demand rises. He added that Arevon remains committed to building infrastructure that supports reliability, affordability, and the state’s clean energy objectives.

Arevon has also been actively involved in community engagement throughout the development of the Cormorant project. The company has collaborated with more than a dozen local and regional organizations through donations, sponsorships, volunteer work, scholarships, and ongoing partnerships. These include groups such as Daly City Partnership, the Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, Pacific Islanders Together, local schools, senior centers, cultural organizations, and the Daly City Colma Chamber of Commerce. The company’s efforts reflect its long-term commitment to supporting equity, opportunity, and community well-being.

Shanelle Montana, Arevon’s Chief Development Officer, emphasised that strong community relationships are essential to long-term project success. She explained that working closely with residents and local leaders ensures that projects are developed with consideration for those who will live alongside them for decades. She noted that Arevon plans to continue these partnerships throughout the construction period and into long-term operations.

Arevon continues to expand its presence across California and the United States. The company currently has more than 3.7 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity in operation nationwide, representing over $5 billion in investment, with an additional 550 MW under construction. It has recently announced milestones at several other California facilities, including the start of operations at the Peregrine, Eland 1, and Vikings solar-plus-storage projects, as well as the Condor Energy Storage Project. The company also secured an offtake agreement for its upcoming Avocet Energy Storage Project. Several of these projects have received industry recognition, including awards for outstanding renewable energy and storage achievements.
