As commercial and industrial businesses across South Africa continue to navigate rising electricity costs and ongoing grid instability, reliable and intelligent energy infrastructure has become essential for operational continuity. In Gauteng, GoodWe, in collaboration with Plexus SA, has delivered a large-scale solar and storage solution for a leading metal fabrication facility, demonstrating how advanced energy technology can drive both resilience and measurable cost savings.
This featured project was designed to address two critical business needs: reducing dependence on the grid and ensuring uninterrupted power supply for energy-intensive industrial operations. For facilities where downtime directly impacts productivity and profitability, energy security is no longer optional โ it is a strategic business priority.
At the core of the installation are 10 ร 50kW GoodWe ET hybrid inverters, delivering a combined inverter capacity of 500kW. The ET series was selected for its proven performance in commercial and industrial applications, offering intelligent energy management and seamless integration between solar PV, battery storage, and grid supply.
To further strengthen reliability, the system incorporates static transfer switches, enabling smooth and uninterrupted transitions during grid outages or fluctuations. This ensures that critical operations can continue without disruption, a key requirement for manufacturing and metal fabrication processes where power interruptions can have significant operational consequences.

Supporting the hybrid inverter system is a robust battery storage solution consisting of 20 ร 56kWh battery units, providing a total installed storage capacity of 1.12MWh. This large-scale storage capacity enables the facility to store excess solar energy generated during the day and deploy it strategically during peak demand periods, grid interruptions, or higher tariff windows.
The solar generation component of the project is equally impressive, with a 900kWp solar PV installation using high-efficiency modules supplied by LONGi Africa. The system has been engineered to maximise daytime generation and support the facilityโs substantial energy requirements, reducing reliance on conventional grid electricity while improving overall energy efficiency.
What makes this project particularly noteworthy is the immediate financial impact it has delivered. Within just a few months of operation, the advanced solar and storage solution has already generated ZAR 1.31 million in savings for the facility. This strong early return highlights the growing business case for integrated solar and storage systems in the commercial and industrial sector.
Beyond cost savings, the installation also strengthens the siteโs long-term energy resilience, helping the facility mitigate risks associated with load shedding, power quality issues, and escalating electricity tariffs. By combining intelligent hybrid inverter technology with large-scale storage and high-output PV generation, the project provides a future-ready solution tailored to the evolving needs of industrial operations.
Delivered in close partnership with Plexus SA, the project also reflects the strength of collaboration and service excellence throughout the process. Plexus SA has expressed that they are extremely pleased with the service, support, and technical assistance provided by GoodWe, highlighting the responsiveness and commitment of the GoodWe team from project planning through to implementation and ongoing support.
This positive feedback reinforces GoodWeโs commitment not only to delivering advanced energy solutions, but also to building trusted partnerships that ensure project success at every stage.
As the demand for resilient commercial and industrial energy solutions continues to grow, this Gauteng installation stands as a strong example of how GoodWeโs integrated solar and storage technologies are helping businesses build smarter, more efficient, and future-ready energy ecosystems.
