Department of Energy Philippines (DOE), in coordination with Energy Regulatory Commission Philippines (ERC), National Transmission Corporation (TransCo), and National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), conducted a site inspection of the ₱5.27 billion Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay Transmission Line Project (NCBTLP) on April 14, 2026, reaffirming efforts to strengthen power infrastructure in Aklan.
The project, currently 93.161% complete, is aimed at enhancing grid reliability and supporting rising electricity demand in Boracay Island and surrounding areas. Once completed, the transmission line is expected to improve system stability, attract renewable energy investments, and address long-standing technical and environmental challenges affecting power supply in the region.
DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevara stated that the government is accelerating the project’s completion, emphasizing the importance of reliable power in supporting economic growth and tourism development in Boracay and Aklan.
The inspection covered key components, including the Boracay GIS Substation, major transmission lines, and underground cable systems linking Nabas, Caticlan, and Boracay Island. The visit forms part of ongoing government oversight to ensure construction quality, safety standards, and timely delivery.
Several components of the project have already been completed and energized, including the Nabas Substation (operational since December 2023), the rehabilitated Unidos-Caticlan transmission line (energized in February 2026), and the upgraded 69-kilovolt XLPE cable. Additional improvements, such as adjustments to the bypass line completed in December 2025, have helped reduce power disruptions caused by environmental factors.
Construction of remaining facilities is progressing steadily, with the Boracay GIS Substation at 80.25% completion and underground cable systems nearing final stages. Key transmission lines and cable infrastructure are reported to be over 99% complete, with final works scheduled primarily during nighttime hours to comply with airport safety regulations. Completion of underground cable components is targeted by June 2026.
The project is expected to benefit over 155,000 residential, 13,000 commercial, and 27 industrial consumers by providing a more stable and reliable electricity supply across the province.
The DOE noted that the NCBTLP is critical to sustaining economic activity, supporting tourism growth, and advancing national energy security goals. The project remains on track for full completion by August 2026, with continued monitoring to ensure long-term reliability and resilience of the region’s power infrastructure.
