The Telangana government has taken a major step toward restructuring its power sector with the creation of the Telangana Rythu Power Distribution Company Limited. The new company was officially incorporated on March 18, 2026, as a public limited entity and has already approached the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission to obtain a license for distributing and supplying electricity across the state.

The main aim behind setting up TGRPDCL is to manage electricity distribution for specific consumer groups that are largely supported by the government. These include agricultural users, Lift Irrigation Schemes (LIS), and important water supply projects such as Mission Bhagiratha and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. By bringing these categories under one dedicated distribution company, the state expects to improve billing efficiency, streamline revenue collection, and strengthen infrastructure development in these sectors.

The company is headed by Musharraf Ali Faruqui, who has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director. The leadership team also includes directors from existing state utilities like the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana and the Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana. To ensure smooth operations from the beginning, TGRPDCL plans to use employees from these existing distribution companies, making use of their experience and expertise in managing power systems.

On the financial side, the company has an authorized share capital of โ‚น5 crore, divided into 50 lakh equity shares. At present, the entire equity is being funded internally, indicating that the company will initially operate without external investment. Plans for debt financing are still under discussion. The company has also received No Objection Certificates from the existing DISCOMs, allowing it to operate within their current licensed areas without conflict.

In its application to the regulator, TGRPDCL has stated that it will not only supply electricity but also take responsibility for maintaining and expanding the distribution network. This includes handling transformers, metering systems, and other essential infrastructure. Once the license is granted, the company must submit a detailed five-year business plan within three months. This plan will include projections for electricity demand, revenue expectations, and strategies to manage future load growth while maintaining reliable service.

This move is seen as an important shift in Telanganaโ€™s power sector approach. By creating a specialized utility focused on agriculture and public service sectors, the government aims to deliver more efficient and targeted electricity services. The restructuring is expected to help improve overall system performance while addressing the unique needs of farmers and essential water supply projects in the state.
