Zambia has taken an important step toward improving its power supply with the commissioning of the Mansa Solar Plant in Luapula Province. The project was officially inaugurated by President Hakainde Hichilema in Chief Mabumbaโs area, marking a major development in the countryโs renewable energy journey. The solar plant has a capacity of 50 megawatts and was built at a cost of around $48 million.
This is a significant achievement for Luapula Province, which has not seen a major investment in power generation for more than sixty years. Speaking at the event, the President said the project is part of the governmentโs long-term plan to increase the countryโs installed electricity capacity to 10,000 megawatts by 2030. He added that the new plant will provide stable and reliable power to support economic activities, especially manganese mining, and will also create job opportunities for local people.
Construction of the solar plant started in February 2025 and was completed quickly by December of the same year. The project was developed by the China Machinery Company and includes more than 1,500 solar panels. Officials highlighted the speed of execution as a positive sign of Zambiaโs commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure.
Energy Minister Makozo Chikote said such investments are already helping the country reduce power shortages and improve grid stability. He noted that the addition of new solar capacity is playing a role in addressing load shedding challenges and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply.
ZESCO Managing Director Justin Loongo also stated that the new plant will strengthen the utilityโs operations and improve service delivery. Local leaders, including Chief Mabumba, expressed their support for the project and assured that the community will help protect the infrastructure from damage or theft.
The Mansa Solar Plant is part of Zambiaโs wider effort to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on traditional power generation. By investing in solar energy, the country aims to build a more sustainable and secure energy future while attracting further investment in the renewable sector.
