The Department of Energy (DOE) recently visited the 221-megawatt-peak Olongapo Solar Power Plant operated by Aboitiz Renewables, Inc., the renewable energy arm of Aboitiz Power Corporation. The visit demonstrated the government’s support for the company’s expanding clean energy portfolio and emphasized the importance of developing domestic renewable resources at a time when the country faces tight energy supply conditions.

This engagement also signaled the DOE’s commitment to working closely with the private sector to accelerate clean energy growth across the Philippines.Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin highlighted that the Olongapo Solar Power Project is one of 22 renewable energy developments being prioritized by the DOE as part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to speed up the country’s energy transition.

She emphasized that Filipinos deserve an energy system that is cleaner, more dependable, and responsive to public needs, and the government is determined to make this a reality. She further noted that ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to affect global fuel markets, making countries heavily reliant on imported energy more vulnerable to price shocks. She explained that strengthening the Philippines’ energy independence through domestic renewable sources is a crucial step to reduce this exposure and build long-term stability.

The Olongapo plant, commissioned in December 2025, marks one of the most recent additions to the growing portfolio of Aboitiz Renewables. During the DOE visit, Secretary Garin was received by AboitizPower President and CEO Danel Aboitiz, along with Aboitiz Renewables President Jimmy Villaroman.

They provided an overview of the company’s projects, which span solar, geothermal, wind, and energy storage developments across the country. The discussion underscored the shared understanding between the DOE and Aboitiz Renewables that expanding reliable, affordable, and clean energy is both a national priority and a strategic business direction.

Villaroman noted the value of maintaining open and constructive communication with the DOE to navigate opportunities and address challenges that come with advancing the country’s energy transition goals.Aboitiz Renewables’ progress reflects this alignment. The company has expanded its attributable dependable capacity from roughly 900 MW in 2020 to about 2.3 GW today—growth that closely follows the national government’s policy direction and long-term energy planning.

Earlier this year, a consortium led by Aboitiz Renewables took over the operation of the 789 MW Caliraya-Botocan-Kalayaan Hydroelectric Power Plant Complex, strengthening its role in supplying clean, indigenous power to the national grid. With several more renewable projects under development and construction, Aboitiz Renewables continues to push forward with its clean energy expansion. These efforts support the country’s broader target of achieving a renewable energy share of 35 percent in the power generation mix by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.
