NTPC Group Achieves Major Milestone In India’s Energy Security With Completion Of 800 MW PVUNL Unit In Jharkhand

NTPC Group has reached a major milestone in India’s energy journey by crossing 90 GW of installed power generation capacity. This achievement comes after the successful trial run of Unit 2, an 800 MW unit at Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL). PVUNL is a subsidiary project designed with three units of 800 MW each, and the completion of this trial brings NTPC one step closer to enhancing India’s energy security and advancing its clean energy transition.

PVUNL was established on October 15, 2015, as a joint venture between an NTPC subsidiary holding 74 percent ownership and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited, which holds the remaining 26 percent. The project is a key part of NTPC’s broader strategy to develop large-scale, reliable power infrastructure across the country.With the addition of the Patratu unit, NTPC Group’s total installed capacity has now exceeded 90 GW.

Alongside this, the company is also building nearly 32 GW of additional capacity across various sites. NTPC aims to expand its total installed capacity to 149 GW by 2032, with renewable energy expected to contribute 60 GW of that total.As part of its strong push towards clean energy, NTPC added 5,488 MW of renewable energy capacity in FY26 alone.

This includes projects across solar, wind, and pumped storage, all contributing to the country’s broader development goals under the vision of Viksit Bharat.NTPC now operates a diverse mix of power generation assets, including thermal, hydro, solar, and wind projects. This balanced portfolio ensures that the company continues to deliver dependable, affordable, and sustainable electricity across India.

Beyond traditional power generation, NTPC has also been expanding into new and emerging sectors. These include electric mobility, battery energy storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy solutions, nuclear power, and green hydrogen technologies. Through these initiatives, NTPC is positioning itself as a key player in shaping India’s future energy landscape.
