RWE and KRONOS TITAN (KRONOS) have strengthened their commitment to sustainable industrial operations with the successful development and commissioning of a new solar power project at the KRONOS production site in Nordenham, Lower Saxony, Germany. The project demonstrates how collaboration between renewable energy providers and industrial manufacturers can accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources while supporting long-term sustainability goals.
RWE has designed, built, and is now operating a ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) plant with a total installed capacity of 24.7 megawatts peak (MWp). The solar farm has been developed on approximately 20 hectares of land located within the KRONOS facility. Under the partnership agreement, KRONOS leases the land to RWE, which is responsible for the investment, development, construction, and operation of the renewable energy project.
The electricity generated by the solar installation will be supplied directly to KRONOS through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This arrangement enables the industrial company to secure a reliable supply of renewable electricity while benefiting from greater predictability in energy costs over the long term.
The solar farm is equipped with more than 38,300 photovoltaic modules and is expected to generate around 22,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean electricity annually. This output will cover a significant portion of the electricity demand at the Nordenham production site, helping reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and lowering the facility’s carbon footprint.
According to Carsten Bรผsing, Plant Manager of KRONOS TITAN GmbH at the Nordenham site, the project represents an important milestone in the company’s sustainability journey. He noted that the solar farm is expected to provide a substantial share of the site’s electricity requirements for at least the next 25 years, making it a key component of KRONOS’ long-term transformation strategy and reinforcing its commitment to more environmentally responsible operations
.Sopna Sury, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia GmbH, emphasized the importance of partnerships in driving the energy transition. She stated that the successful commissioning of the solar park demonstrates how renewable energy projects can be effectively implemented when industrial customers and energy providers work together.
While companies such as KRONOS contribute suitable land for renewable energy development, RWE brings expertise in financing, planning, construction, operations, and energy trading. This approach allows industrial customers to access long-term supplies of green electricity under stable and predictable conditions.
The project serves as a practical example of how renewable energy solutions can be integrated directly into industrial operations. By combining locally generated solar power with long-term supply agreements, companies can reduce emissions, improve energy security, and support broader climate objectives without compromising operational reliability.
As industries across Europe continue to pursue decarbonization strategies, partnerships like the one between RWE and KRONOS are expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding renewable energy capacity and helping energy-intensive sectors transition toward more sustainable production models.
