Ammongas, a subsidiary of European Energy specializing in biogas upgrading technologies, has signed an agreement to supply a complete biomethane upgrading system for a new renewable gas facility being developed in Llรญria, near Valencia, Spain. The project marks another important step in Spain’s efforts to expand its renewable gas infrastructure and accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon energy system.
The facility will be developed by The Green Vector, a joint venture formed by Enagรกs Renovables and Genia. Once operational, the plant will convert biogas generated from agricultural, livestock, and agrifood waste into high-quality biomethane that can be injected directly into the Spanish gas grid. By transforming organic waste into renewable energy, the project will support both emissions reduction goals and circular economy initiatives within Spain’s agricultural and livestock sectors.
A major focus of the project is environmental performance and operational efficiency. The facility is expected to significantly reduce methane emissions while ensuring compliance with increasingly stringent European Union regulations governing renewable gas production. In addition, the plant has been designed to maximize energy efficiency and is expected to reuse more than 80 percent of the heat generated during the upgrading process.
This high level of heat recovery will help lower overall energy consumption and improve the sustainability of plant operations.Under the terms of the agreement, Ammongas will provide a complete biomethane upgrading solution with a design capacity of 1,850 Nmยณ/h. The facility is projected to produce approximately 90 GWh of biomethane annually, contributing to Spain’s growing renewable energy capacity and helping reduce reliance on conventional fossil fuels.
The project will utilize Best Available Techniques (BATs) throughout its operations, ensuring that biomethane production meets high environmental and efficiency standards. By applying advanced technologies and proven operational practices, the facility aims to deliver reliable renewable gas production while minimizing environmental impact.
Commenting on the agreement, Jaime Casasus-Bribian, CEO of Ammongas, emphasized the strategic importance of the Spanish biomethane market and the company’s commitment to supporting its growth.According to Casasus-Bribian, Spain represents a significant growth opportunity for biomethane development, and Ammongas is pleased to contribute to the expansion of renewable gas infrastructure in the country.
He noted that the company will provide a complete upgrading solution specifically designed to enable efficient biomethane production and seamless grid injection, drawing on more than two decades of experience in the biogas industry. The new facility will be located approximately 30 kilometers from the city of Valencia and will primarily use agricultural waste streams as feedstock for the anaerobic digestion process.
Through the conversion of organic waste into renewable gas, the plant is expected to support sustainable waste management practices while creating additional value from agricultural and livestock by-products.Once operational, the project will contribute to increasing Spain’s domestic production of renewable gas and help reduce emissions from sectors that are traditionally difficult to decarbonize.
It will also support the country’s broader energy transition objectives by providing a reliable source of locally produced renewable energy.Industry experts view the project as part of a larger trend within Spain’s rapidly expanding biomethane sector. Over the past several years, the country has witnessed increasing investment in renewable gas projects as governments, utilities, and private companies seek alternatives to fossil fuels and work toward achieving climate targets.
Daniel Silva Cepeda, Commercial Manager for Spain and Southern Europe at Ammongas, noted that the pace of biomethane development in Spain has accelerated considerably in recent years. He explained that the market is now seeing a growing number of innovative projects that go beyond what was previously typical, reflecting increased confidence in biomethane’s role within the country’s future energy mix.
He further stated that the Llรญria project demonstrates the growing recognition of biomethane as a key component of Spain’s long-term decarbonization strategy. At the same time, it highlights rising demand for advanced upgrading technologies capable of producing grid-quality biomethane efficiently and reliably.
As Spain continues to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio, projects such as the Llรญria biomethane facility are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable waste management, and advancing the country’s transition toward a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
