Speaking on the sidelines of the Dubai-South Africa Business Forum in Johannesburg, Lester Bouah, Chief Director for Investment Mobilisation at South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, described the UAE as a strategic economic partner and highlighted its growing role in supporting investment and trade opportunities across Africa.

Bouah noted that Dubai’s position as a global trade and investment hub is creating new opportunities for South African businesses while facilitating stronger commercial connections between Africa and international markets.

According to Bouah, bilateral economic relations have expanded significantly in recent years, supported by high-level engagements between government officials and business leaders from both countries. He emphasized that South Africa views the UAE as a key partner in advancing long-term economic cooperation and investment.

Trade figures reflect the strengthening partnership, with South African exports to the UAE reaching approximately US$2.68 billion. The UAE has also emerged as a major foreign investor in South Africa, with Emirati companies undertaking 33 investment projects valued at nearly US$22.96 billion, generating more than 5,500 jobs.

Bouah highlighted renewable energy as one of the most promising sectors for future collaboration, alongside infrastructure development and advanced manufacturing. He said South Africa is actively seeking additional Emirati investment in productive industries that can support economic growth, accelerate the energy transition, and create employment opportunities.

He added that the relationship between the two countries extends beyond trade and investment, encompassing broader strategic cooperation built on mutual trust, shared interests, and a commitment to expanding economic opportunities across multiple sectors.

The discussions at the Dubai-South Africa Business Forum underscore the growing potential for UAE-South Africa collaboration in clean energy and sustainable development as both nations seek to strengthen economic partnerships and support long-term growth.
